A cliff that tells two thousand years of history
There is a cliff, above Tresivio, that seems made just to dominate the valley.
You get there by walking up among the vineyards. And when you reach the top, you realize it is not just a viewpoint. It is a place where history has accumulated in layers.
Under the small church of the Calvary, there is a medieval castle. Below the castle, there are even older structures. And around it, for centuries, the famous Pietra Verde di Tresivio has been extracted, the stone that has adorned churches, portals, and houses throughout the valley.
It is the perfect place to understand how a small hill can tell two thousand years of history.
What is the church of the Calvary of Tresivio
The church is better known as the Oratorio del Calvario. It stands on the homonymous cliff that dominates the town of Tresivio.
The journey of the Calvary begins in 1646, with the laying of the first stone of the Sanctuary of the Holy House of Loreto. A few years later, in 1658, the Oratorio del Calvario is built, right on the cliff that dominates the town, thanks to the initiative of the Confraternity of the Most Holy Sacrament.
The path recalls the tradition of the Sacred Mountains of Lombardy: it winds uphill along a trail lined with iron crosses and small devotional stations.
The church is the destination of the traditional procession of Holy Friday, which starts from the sanctuary of the Holy House and winds along this path.
What is the Pietra Verde di Tresivio and where is the quarry located
You approach the cliff and look at the stone. It looks like marble, but it is not.
It is the Pietra Verde di Tresivio: a green-gray rock, easy to work with, used for centuries for cladding, masonry, floors, stairs, thresholds, and roofs.
The quarry was located at the foot of the Cliffs of Calvary. A study from the Cultural District of Valtellina describes it as a highly sought-after stone, easy to work with and of beautiful color.
In 2002, the Province of Sondrio still considered it a valuable resource, with a dedicated extraction area. Today, the quarry has been inactive for years, and vegetation has almost completely covered it.
The Pietra Verde di Tresivio was also used for the 18th-century portals of the Holy House, as remembered by the guides of the Marian Way of the Alps.
How to reach the quarry of Pietra Verde
The quarry is located in a scenic area, just cleaned up and restored. It is well visible because they removed the vegetation that covered it.
To reach it:
- start from Piazza della Fontana, in the center of Tresivio;
- instead of going up towards the Calvary, take the path south;
- continue to the end of the path, where there is also the “Paradiso dei Cani”;
- the “Paradiso dei Cani” can be recognized because it is bordered by a small railing.
The quarry is right there, clearly visible, with the green-gray rock emerging from the ground.
The medieval castle and archaeological excavations
Since 2023, the University of Bergamo has been excavating on the hill of Calvary, together with the Superintendency and the Municipality of Tresivio.
The project is called Archeo Alps and is led by archaeologist Federico Zoni.
The initial idea was to study the medieval castle. The surprise: the hill was already inhabited in late antiquity, between the 4th and 6th centuries, long before the Middle Ages.
The castle was built on top of much older structures.
Archaeologists found a wall with blind arches six meters high, perfectly preserved, a rarity for the Alps.
In 2025, the excavations brought to light:
- the foundations of the castle;
- remains of a tower from the 13th century;
- everyday objects: coins, ceramics, dice, a knife with a bone handle.
The most shocking discovery: the skeleton of a child who lived perhaps a thousand years ago, buried alone, without burial goods.
The child has been entrusted to LABANOF (laboratory of forensic anthropology of the University of Milan). The results are not yet out, so we can only make hypotheses about who they truly were.
Ancient use of the area
Archaeologists have discovered that there was use during the Romanization period and especially prehistoric times.
Although they had already found older materials in previous years, this excavation campaign has unearthed remains definitely from the 2nd century AD and others that are perhaps even older.
For now, they are patches of older soil probably reshaped by medieval construction sites, but they testify to a significant and present use of the area in earlier times than late antiquity.
How to reach the Calvary and the excavations
To reach the Calvary and the excavation area:
- start from Piazza della Fontana, in the center of Tresivio;
- follow the uphill path lined with the crosses of the Via Crucis;
- continue to the top of the cliff, where the Oratorio del Calvario is located.
The archaeological excavation area is located just below the church, on the hillside. Once at the top, the archaeological site with the structures brought to light is clearly visible.
The climb takes about 10–15 minutes and is suitable for everyone, with a well-marked path.
Legends and unconfirmed hypotheses
Regarding the Roman origins of the castle, the Lombard presence, the title of “the oldest castle in Valtellina,” hidden treasures: no excavation has confirmed any of it, for now.
These are suggestions that have circulated for years, but they remain hypotheses.
What excavations confirm with certainty is that the hill was already inhabited in late antiquity, long before the Middle Ages, and that the medieval castle was built on top of much older structures.
A redevelopment project: the “Paradiso dei Cani”
To the south of the archaeological area, in the zone that the people of Tresivio still call “Paradiso dei Cani”, an official project is underway:
“Revaluation of the Archaeological Area of Calvary, Construction of Park and thematic paths”.
The idea is to transform this area into an accessible archaeological park, with thematic paths that tell the story of the hill, from the quarry of Pietra Verde to the medieval castle, up to the most recent excavations.
What must be clearly stated
Not everything said about the Calvary of Tresivio is documented.
Some reconstructions speak of Roman origins, Lombard presence, or even hidden treasures. These are suggestions, but they lack scientific foundations.
What we know for sure is that:
- the church of the Calvary was built in 1658 by the Confraternity of the Most Holy Sacrament;
- beneath the cliff was the quarry of the Pietra Verde di Tresivio;
- archaeological excavations have demonstrated that the hill was already inhabited in late antiquity (4th–6th century);
- the medieval castle was built over much older structures;
- in 2025 remains of a 13th-century tower, everyday objects, and the skeleton of a child were uncovered.
The rest is still a subject of study and debate among specialists.
The park that is being developed now
To the south of the archaeological area, in the zone that the people of Tresivio still call "Paradiso dei Cani", an official project is underway: "Revaluation of the Archaeological Area of Calvary, Construction of Park and thematic paths". This involves a cobblestone path, dry stone walls restored using the "cuci e scuci" technique by reusing the original stones, a scenic terrace, a "scenic slit" (ex paradiso dei cani) that nods to medieval castles, and a space for educational and cultural activities. All this is progressing alongside the restoration of the Chapel of Calvary, funded by PNRR funds.
