Opening the prestigious season programme of the Municipality of Sondrio will be Verdi’s La Traviata on Friday 2 October

(Sondrio, 23 September 2026) - The 2026/2027 season at the Teatro Sociale is just around the corner: as tradition dictates, it will be opened with an opera, Verdi’s La Traviata, one of the masterpieces of Italian melodrama, on Friday 2 October at 8 pm. With a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, drawn from La signora delle camelie by Alexandre Dumas fils, the opera brings to the stage the tragic love story between Parisian courtesan Violetta Valéry and the young nobleman Alfredo Germont.

«Let’s revive the tradition of getting together at the theatre in autumn with opera, an expression of Italian musical genius that has made us famous around the world,» says the Councillor for Culture, Education and Education Marcella Fratta -. «As the municipal administration, we want to support our Italian identity, and an opera like Verdi’s La Traviata, even with its sad and complex plot, is a celebration of love that goes beyond every barrier. The bond between Violetta and Alfredo goes beyond the separation of earthly death, celebrates the purity of love, and asserts human dignity against any prejudice. The arias from this opera have entered the shared heritage, and we hope the audience will come in large numbers to the theatre.»

La Traviata will be only the start of an intense season running until April, with ten plays and four additional shows outside the subscription, spanning drama and comedy, music and dance, right up to the musical.

For the subscription season performances, the plays kick off on Friday 23 October with “Eumenidi. Tutta, tutta del padre io sono”: Aeschylus and Greek tragedy handled directly and simply, in the adaptation by Gabriele Scotti and Serena Sinigaglia, with the latter also credited with directing. The story focuses on the transition from archaic justice to the patriarchal system, decreed by Athena, from the perspective of the Furies.

Next comes, on 12 November, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” by William Shakespeare, which in the morning will be presented to students in English. Then, on 23 November, “Murder on the Orient Express” by Agatha Christie, on 9 December “I Mezzalira. Panni sporchi fritti in casa”, and on 27 January 2027 “Gino Bartali, eroe silenzioso”, with also a morning session for schools.

On 5 February, Violante Placido will perform “Marilyn”, acting and singing; on 17 February, the Oblivion—Bologna’s vocal and comedy group—will return to Sondrio to present “Win for Life”, while on 4 March Yasmina Reza’s “Le dieu du carnage” will take the stage. The programme continues with “Monet. A life in colour” on 16 March, closing on 12 April with “Le nostre donne”, with Luca Bizzarri’s trademark verve.

The other four off-subscription shows, besides La Traviata, are: “Wish you were here”, about Pink Floyd and Syd Barrett, on 6 November; “The Snow Maiden”, with the Etoile Ballet Theatre, to music by Tchaikovsky, in the afternoon of 6 January; “Lupin, the musical”, on 15 January; and “Mozart in B flat”, on 7 March, with the orchestra i Pomeriggi musicali.

«The season is packed with appointments of a truly high standard,» concludes Councillor Fratta. «We’re grateful to our artistic director Andrea Ragosta and to all the staff at the Events Office, led by the head Silvia Bertini, for all the work that has gone into it.»

Tickets for La Traviata can be purchased at the Museo Valtellinese di Storia e Arte, Tuesday to Sunday, from 10 am to 12.30 pm and from 2 pm to 5.30 pm; at the Teatro Sociale, only in the three hours leading up to the performance; and online at Visita Sondrio. For subsequent events—both within the subscription and outside it—tickets will be on sale, using the same arrangements, from 6 October.
