The Bernina line of the Rhaetian Railway (FR) is experiencing a significant increase in demand, with challenges during peak hours, particularly during holidays and due to the large number of daily tourists. To improve the situation, the FR has expanded transport capacity where possible and introduced additional measures to reduce overcrowding, ensure an optimal travel experience, and improve working conditions for staff at stations and on trains.
Compared to the previous year, 600 additional seats have been created for each direction, expanding the schedule with an additional daily regional train in each direction and an additional Bernina Express Tirano – St. Moritz – Tirano train.
To ensure safety on trains and platforms, as well as the travel experience during the journey, during the expected peak days from December 26, 2025, to January 5, 2026, access to trains at the Tirano and St. Moritz stations will be regulated and, if necessary, limited; as a result, extended waiting times may occur.
The peak hours (according to experiences from past years) are from 7:00 to 13:00 heading Tirano – St. Moritz and from 13:00 to 18:00 heading St. Moritz – Tirano. Travelers are advised to allow for longer travel times and, if necessary, to choose alternative times or days for their journey.
Access control system at the Tirano and St. Moritz stations
To make the flow of people and access to trains as efficient as possible, measures will be implemented in Tirano and St. Moritz. Both stations will have a waiting area for groups and individual travelers with reservations on the Bernina Express or regional trains, as well as a waiting area for individual travelers without seat reservations.
Staff will count the people waiting and will allow access to the trains only to the number of travelers without reservations that is compatible with the available capacity. For arriving travelers, a free exit corridor will be maintained at both the Tirano and St. Moritz stations.
The RhB employs additional staff at both stations to assist customers.
