An event born from a shared passion between valtellinesi transplanted in Berlin and Berliners who love the iconic climbs of cycling. Thus, in 2016, MOGAST – an acronym for Mortirolo, Gavia, and Stelvio, the three legendary alpine passes to climb in a single day – came to life from a playful challenge among a group of friends and a strong desire to test themselves. Year after year, the event has involved an increasing number of enthusiasts, while still maintaining its authentic spirit.
Also in 2025, MOGAST confirms itself as a deliberately family-oriented event that combines sport, conviviality, and enhancement of the territory. This is evidenced by the 120 participants from the last edition – with limited spots sold out in just a few hours, in the face of an even wider demand – who gathered in the picturesque setting of Casa Natura in Sernio to share moments of exchange and relationship, aperitifs and dinners in an informal environment, where sharing was the protagonist.
Many participants arrive in the days leading up to the event, taking the opportunity to explore other famous alpine passes in Valtellina. In addition to the classic trio Mortirolo – Gavia – Stelvio, a fascinating gravel route has also been proposed in recent years, passing through Grosio to Passo Verva and Decauville, concluding at the Passo dello Stelvio.
The undisputed protagonist of the challenge was the Mortirolo from Sernio, appreciated for its scenic beauty, the care of the route – thanks to the commitment of the Comune di Sernio – and the almost total absence of motorized traffic. The departure was accompanied by the blessing of don Mauro Confortola, parish priest of the six bell towers.
Among the distinguishing features of MOGAST, attention to sustainability stands out. Numerous participants – particularly the German cyclists – reached Valtellina by train from southern Germany, then continued by bike through the Alps. Many stay for an entire week, choosing to experience an immersive experience centered around slow tourism, among nature, culture, and gastronomy.
With the Passo dello Stelvio closed, this year's edition concluded in Cancano, with the scenic tour of the dams, an alternative that did not detract from the charm of the challenge and the satisfaction of the participants.
Among the most appreciated novelties is the creation of a 24-page photobook given to all participants, which tells the story of MOGAST, the emotions of the protagonists, the beauties of Valtellina, and also includes the original recipe for pizzoccheri.
The collaboration with the Accademia del Pizzocchero of Teglio – now an indispensable presence and the beating heart of Saturday's dinner at Casa Natura – helps make the experience of the participants even more engaging and unforgettable.
Ever more international, MOGAST 2025 involved cyclists from eight countries: 81 from Germany, 18 from Italy, 7 from Switzerland, 6 from the USA, 3 from France, 3 from the Netherlands, 3 from Austria, and 1 from Denmark.
“The greatest satisfaction – states Pierluigi Negri, director of the Consorzio Turistico Media Valtellina – is seeing how an amateur event grows in quality and visibility, while maintaining the authentic identity that distinguishes it. MOGAST is now a symbol of sustainable cycle tourism and territorial enhancement.”
A special thanks goes to the Accademia del Pizzocchero, to the Comune di Sernio for the care of the route, to Legambiente Lombardia for the hospitality of the area, and to Bruno and Mauro from the MOGAST staff for the impeccable organization.
