📍 Where they are located
The Acquafraggia Waterfalls are located in Borgonuovo di Piuro, in the province of Sondrio, at the entrance of Val Bregaglia, a few kilometers from Chiavenna. They can be seen from the state road of Maloja and are easily reachable on foot from the town center.
🌄 A natural monument of rare beauty
The Acquafraggia stream originates at 3050 meters on Pizzo di Lago, on the border with Switzerland. Descending towards the valley floor, it flows through two suspended valleys of glacial origin, forming a series of waterfalls, among which stands the famous double drop visible from the park. The name "Acquafraggia" comes from the Latin aqua fracta, meaning "broken water", indicating the stream's course interrupted by numerous waterfalls.
These waterfalls also fascinated Leonardo da Vinci, who mentioned them in his Codice Atlantico describing them as "waterfalls of 400 arms which provide a view".
🚶♂️ Immersive experience in nature
The Acquafraggia Waterfalls Park offers equipped trails that allow visitors to get close to the waterfalls and admire them from different angles. Along the path, panoramic terraces provide breathtaking views of the valley and the surrounding vegetation
For more experienced hikers, it is possible to continue to the medieval village of Savogno, reachable via a mule track with over 2,000 steps, immersed in an unspoiled alpine landscape.
