Located on a natural terrace among the terraced vineyards of Montagna in Valtellina, Castel Grumello is one of the most fascinating destinations in the mid-Valtellina. More than a single castle, it is actually two twin castles, built next to each other during the 13th century.
🏯 Two souls, one fortification
The Castel Grumello complex consists of:
- a noble residence, used as a home by the De' Capitanei family
- a military fortification, with towers, walls, and walkways
Both bodies were surrounded by a common wall. Together, they formed a rather rare defensive and residential system for medieval Valtellina.
🕰 A place rich in history
Castel Grumello was built in the 13th century by the De' Capitanei of Grumello, a powerful Guelph family. Its strategic position dominated the Adda valley, ensuring military control and visibility over the entire valley floor.
In 1526, like many other Valtellinese castles, it was dismantled by order of the Grisons, who feared local uprisings. Today, the towers, part of the walls, and the foundations of the noble residence remain, well-preserved and enhanced thanks to various restoration efforts.
🌄 Landscapes and paths through the vineyards
The castle can be reached on foot with a short walk through the vineyards of Sassella. From the highest point, there is a panoramic view of central Valtellina, Sondrio, and the peaks of the Rhaetian Alps.
Castel Grumello is one of the sites of the FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano), which manages it and opens it to the public for:
