A castle between history, alpine culture, and beautiful landscapes
Perched on a hill overlooking Sondrio and the entrance to Valmalenco, Castel Masegra is the only urban castle in the city that survived the destructions of the 17th century. Today, in addition to being a historical symbol, it houses the CAST – the Castle of Mountain Stories, a multimedia museum that tells the profound connection between man and the Alps.
📜 Millennial history
The origins of Castel Masegra date back to the 11th century when it was built by the Capitanei family, powerful feudal lords from Valtellina. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands among several noble families, including the Beccaria and Salis. During the rule of the Grisons, it was spared demolition thanks to its function as the residence of the Salis family. Over time, the castle underwent architectural transformations, becoming a noble residence with Renaissance loggias and frescoes.
