Ponte In Valtellina

Discover the Church of San Maurizio in Ponte in Valtellina: a rare well-preserved example between Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance. Frescoes, choir stalls, and works of art.

📍 Where it is located

The Parish Church of San Maurizio is located in the heart of the historic center of Ponte in Valtellina, overlooking the main square of the village. It is the main place of worship of the hamlet and one of the most important religious monuments in Valtellina.

🏛️ A rare example of stylistic stratification

Built in the 13th century, the church was enlarged in 1347 and brought to its current dimensions in the mid-15th century.
Over time, it has undergone several renovations, but it has retained the harmonious coexistence of Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance styles, which is rare in Valtellina, where many sacred buildings were modified in the Baroque era.

It was restored in 1878 and, more recently, in 1998.

🎨 Facade and bell tower

The facade dates back to 1460, designed by Jacopo Corti from Valsolda.
It is dominated by a majestic marble portal, with a lunette frescoed by Bernardino Luini.

On the east side stands the bell tower, with some engraved corner stones that preserve archaic traces.

🏛️ Three-nave interior

The interior is in a three-nave basilica plan, separated by granite columns with sculpted capitals.
The roof features visible wooden trusses, some still original.

The most scenic space is the presbytery, created in the 1500s by brothers Giacomo and Tommaso Rodari, authors of:

  • Refined architecture
  • Marble medallions
  • Sacristy portal
  • Marble tabernacle

Here you can also find:

  • The coral stalls by Pietro Brasca (1500), modified in the 1600s by Pietro Ramus
  • The quadratures on the walls made by Giuseppe Porro (around 1770)

✨ The masterpiece: the bronze ciborium

The true jewel of the church is the bronze ciborium, made in 1578 by brothers Innocenzo and Francesco Guicciardi, local goldsmiths with a workshop in Milan.
The work aligns with the guidelines of San Carlo Borromeo for sacred furnishings: elegant, sober, perfectly integrated into the architectural context.

🖼️ Artworks and artistic details

Among the numerous works preserved in the church, the following stand out:

  • The frescoed polyptych by Giovanni Battista Malacrida from Musso (first chapel on the left)
  • The baptismal font from 1585 with a carved wooden cover
  • The splendid altar piece by Giacomo Del Maino (first chapel on the right)
  • The frescoes on the vaults by Felice Scotti
  • The wooden pulpit from 1611, made by Baldassarre Heger
  • The frescoes by Giovanni Gavazzeni, dated 1899
