The historic district that tells the story of Sondrio
Just a few steps from the center, Contrada della Baiacca offers an authentic glimpse of the Sondrio of the past.
With its narrow stone streets and historic houses, this neighborhood preserves the memory of the farming town, far from modernity.
Along the ancient Via Baiacca, in addition to the characteristic rural views, you can admire two extraordinary specimens of white mulberry (Morus alba), set among dry stone walls, true living monuments.
🏘️ Contrada della Baiacca: a timeless neighborhood
Unlike the elegant residences along the ancient Via Valeriana, Baiacca has preserved its rural spirit.
This architectural contrast highlights the social diversity that has animated Sondrio over the centuries: on one side the aristocracy, on the other the farming life, made up of simple and ancient gestures.
Walking in Baiacca means discovering an authentic Sondrio, made of stones worn by time and stories kept in the walls.
🌳 The monumental Mulberries: nature and history intertwined
Among the hidden treasures of the district, the two Mulberries of Via Baiacca stand out, registered in the Register of Monumental Trees of the Lombardy Region.
One of them, recorded in 2019, boasts a circumference of 2.40 meters and reaches 10.5 meters in height.
Their roots intertwine among the stones, in perfect harmony between nature and traditional architecture.
In 2023, the Comune di Sondrio initiated maintenance interventions to ensure the preservation and safety of these green giants, aware of their historical and landscape value.
🛡️ The bomb shelter of World War II
During the Second World War, right under Baiacca, the construction of a bomb shelter was started, carved into the spur of San Bartolomeo.
Designed to accommodate up to 5,000 people, the shelter was never completed due to the end of the conflict, but it was still used as a refuge during air raids.
Another testament to how this district, seemingly quiet, experienced the great events of history firsthand.
