Immersed in the tranquility of Castello dell’Acqua, in Valtellina, the Fucina Cavallari is a rare example of proto-industrial alpine archaeology. Active for over two centuries, it represents an extraordinary reference point for understanding the life and artisanal work of mountain communities.

Restored and enhanced by the Comunità Montana Valtellina di Sondrio, it is now visitable by reservation and is one of the few sites still capable of transmitting, live, the power of water transformed into labor.

⚙️ An ingenious hydraulic system

What makes the Fucina Cavallari unique is its hydraulic operating system, both simple and ingenious. A true example of technology applied with wisdom and observation:

• 💧 A water bellows created from a hollowed trunk, which uses the pressure of compressed air in an underlying cistern to power the forges.
• ⚙️ A system of lever balances to manually regulate the hydraulic gates, allowing the blacksmith to modulate the force of the water based on the work to be done.
• 🔁 Overflow gates, drains, and adjustable covers, born from experience rather than theory.

This system ensured a continuous and constant airflow, essential for fueling the fire of the forges and operating the large hydraulic wheels, the hammer, and the impressive grindstone.

It is said that the blows of the forge hammer were so powerful they could be heard as far away as Teglio, a sign of the extraordinary strength conveyed by the hydraulic system. The power of the water was completely under the control of the craftsman, who modulated it according to needs.
