San Lorenzo Treasure Museum – A Dive into the Sacred Heart of Chiavenna
When you arrive in Chiavenna, one of the places you cannot miss is the Treasure Museum, located inside the historic Collegiate Church of San Lorenzo. You don't need to be an art expert to be struck by this place: it is a journey through time, filled with sacred objects, frescoes, and stories that narrate centuries of faith and culture.
📍 Where to find it
The museum is located right in Piazza Don Pietro Bormetti 3, in the heart of the historic center, next to the Collegiate Church. If you arrive by train, it takes just a few minutes on foot from the station. If you arrive by car, there are parking areas around the center.
✨ What you can see
Inside the museum, there is a precious collection of sacred art: chalices, reliquaries, processional crosses, liturgical vestments, and goldsmith work from the Romanesque period to the Nineteenth century. Most pieces come from the Collegiate itself or from other churches in Valchiavenna.
But the real highlight of the museum is the famous Chiavenna Peace, a gilded evangelist cover dating back to the 11th century. It is decorated with precious stones, enamels, pearls... something that leaves you speechless. It is thought to be a gift from a foreign bishop in the Middle Ages. If you love details, you will find plenty to marvel at here.

✒️ Why visit?
Because this place tells you the story of Valchiavenna in a direct and concrete way, without frills. And because the quality and value of the works held here rival those of more renowned museums. Moreover, the architectural context of the Collegiate Church is truly evocative, with its portico built between the Seventeenth and Eighteenth centuries, and the ancient silences that seem to speak even today.
If you are in the area, a stop here is truly worth it. You take home a piece of history, but also a bit of wonder.
