A Renaissance gem in the heart of the Cantone district
In the heart of the historic Cantone district in Sondrio stands the Palazzo Carbonera, an elegant Renaissance residence that showcases the wealth and aesthetic taste of the Valtellinese noble families of the 16th century. Built by the Parravicini family, the palace overlooks the characteristic Piazzetta Carbonera, offering a refined example of civil architecture from that era.
📜 History and architecture
Constructed around 1535, Palazzo Carbonera represents one of the purest examples of Renaissance architecture in Valtellina. Its façade is decorated with sgraffito diamond patterns, while the internal courtyard features a portico and a loggia on two levels, with full arches supported by stone columns. These architectural elements evoke Bramantesque models, similar to those found in the contemporary Palazzo Besta di Teglio.
The palace was later owned by the Carbonera family, from which it derives its current name. Their influence is also visible in the nearby Chiesetta dell'Angelo Custode, built in 1657 on the remains of the church of San Siro, and in the Stüa Carbonera, a room adorned with carved larch wood, originally part of the palace and today preserved at Villa Quadrio.
