An architectural masterpiece between tradition and modernity
Palazzo Muzio, located in the heart of Sondrio between Corso XXV Aprile and Via Vittorio Veneto, is an emblematic example of institutional architecture of the 20th century. Designed by the Milanese architect Giovanni Muzio between 1933 and 1935, the building currently houses the Province and the Prefecture of Sondrio.
🏗️ History and Architecture
The necessity to construct a new government building arose after the flood of 1927 that damaged the provincial offices.
In 1930, a national competition was announced, won by Giovanni Muzio, who designed a building inspired by the Valtellinese architectural tradition. The building has a trapezoidal shape and develops over three floors. Two symmetrical towers, one for the Province and the other for the Prefecture, rise at the ends of the building. The facades are characterized by graffiti decorations and the use of local materials such as granite and serpentine.
🎨 Interiors and Decorations
Inside, the central courtyard is paved with pebbles and hosts a granite fountain. The Council Room is decorated with six large encaustic panels created in 1934 by Gianfilippo Usellini, depicting scenes of Valtellinese life and work, such as the grape harvest, weaving, and alpine grazing.
The interior furnishings, designed by Muzio himself, were made by local craftsmen, using typical materials from the area, giving the building a strong connection to the territory.
