History and art in the Valtellinese noble residence
Situated in the historic heart of Sondrio, precisely in Piazza Quadrivio, the Palazzo Paribelli is one of the most significant examples of noble architecture in the city. Built between the late 16th century and the early 17th century, it represents the desire of the Paribelli family to assert their prestige through an imposing and refined residence.
📚 History and architecture of Palazzo Paribelli
The palace features an irregular plan and is developed over four above-ground floors, with vertical stone structures bonded with mortar. The main facade, facing Piazza Quadrivio, is characterized by a central stone portal dating back to the 19th century, on whose keystone is an worn coat of arms. On either side of the portal are two arcades of equal size. The upper floors are marked by three tiers of windows. On the first floor, there are two little balconies on brackets with wrought iron railings, added during a renovation in the mid-19th century. At the extreme left of the facade is a large arcade above which develops the passage connecting to Palazzo Giaccone.
Through the central portal, one enters a paved atrium, from which the staircase leading to the second floor begins. The building is currently used as offices, while still maintaining its original structure.
