A unique ecosystem between Valtellina and Valchiavenna
The Pian di Spagna and Lago di Mezzola Natural Reserve is a protected area established in 1985, covering about 1,586 hectares. It is located between Lake Mezzola and the northern part of Lake Como, including the municipalities of Sorico, Gera Lario, Dubino, Verceia, and Novate Mezzola.
This flat area, at about 200 meters above sea level, is an important ecological corridor for migratory birds, included in the European Natura 2000 network.
🐦 Flora and fauna
The reserve hosts a rich biodiversity:
- Flora: extensive areas of reeds (Phragmites australis), sedges (Carex spp.), water lilies (Nymphaea spp.), and other aquatic plants.
- Fauna: numerous species of waterfowl such as herons, coots, mallards, swans, along with mammals like foxes, deer, and wild boars. The reserve is a stopover and nesting site for many migratory species .
🥾 Itineraries and activities
The reserve offers various paths for hiking or cycling:
- Adda Bridge – Cascina Lodoletta: an itinerary that allows you to admire the Forte di Fuentes, a Spanish fortification from the 17th century
- Dascio – Tempietto di San Fedelino: a route of about 3 hours leading to a 10th-century church, accessible also by boat from Novate Mezzola.
- Passo Bridge – Sasso di Dascio: ideal for birdwatching, offering a panoramic view of Lake Mezzola
