The Wine Road of Valtellina is a panoramic route of 67 km that winds from Ardenno to Tirano, crossing the picturesque terraced vineyards of the Rhaetian Alps. 

This route offers an immersion in Valtellina's wine tradition, among historic cellars, characteristic villages, and spectacular landscapes

The road is fully accessible by car and well-marked, making it suitable for both cars and bicycles. Along the way, you will encounter locations of great interest, such as Sondrio, Chiuro, Teglio, and Tirano, each with its own cultural and gastronomic peculiarities.​

🍇 The denominations

Valtellina is renowned for its production of high-quality wines, particularly:​

  • Valtellina Superiore DOCG: produced in the subzones of Maroggia, Sassella, Grumello, Inferno, and Valgella. ​
  • Sforzato di Valtellina DOCG: obtained from dried Nebbiolo grapes. ​
  • Rosso di Valtellina DOC: young and fruity wine. ​
  • Alpi Retiche IGT: typical geographical indication for white and red wines. ​

For walking enthusiasts, the Wine Road offers several loop trails among the vineyards:​

  • Maroggia Loop: 6 km with an elevation gain of 281 m. ​
  • Sassella Santuario Loop: 5.8 km with an elevation gain of 237 m.
  • Grumello Loop: 4.4 km with an elevation gain of 276 m. ​

These routes allow for exploration of the various wine subzones, offering unique views and the opportunity to visit cellars and taste local wines.​

  • Castel Masegra in Sondrio: an ancient fortress with origins dating back to 1048, now home to a museum dedicated to the rule of the Three Grey Leagues over Valtellina. ​
  • Santuario della Madonna di Loreto in Tresivio: a Marian sanctuary located on a rocky promontory. ​
  • Palazzo Salis in Tirano: a historic residence with frescoes and period furnishings.
