🐄 Wine and Milk of the Farmers: The Drink of the Stable

Once upon a time, stables were not just places of work, but real evening meeting spots. The old Valtellinese farmers would gather around the warmth of the animals to pray, tell stories, and share small moments of everyday simplicity. The women would spin wool, embroider, and make socks… and in the meantime, in a wooden bowl, they would pass around this ancient farmers' drink made of red wine and freshly milked milk, sweetened with a touch of sugar 🍷🥛. A gesture of brotherhood that tells a simple and authentic culture.

📝 Ingredients (for about 4 people):

  • 50 g of sugar
  • 500 ml of red wine (of good quality)
  • 500 ml of warm freshly milked milk

👩‍🍳 Preparation:

  1. In a bowl (preferably wooden), mix the sugar with the red wine until it dissolves.
  2. Gently add the freshly milked milk, still warm, being careful that it is not too hot to avoid it souring or curdling.
  3. Stir gently and serve immediately, ideally in wooden cups or bowls, to respect tradition.

🧑‍🌾 Curiosity:

In ancient times, this drink was sipped slowly, between “pater” prayers, in stables warmed by the presence of animals. It was a way to share time, faith, and refreshment, among families, friends, and neighbors.
