Jar Cake 🫙 – The Perfect Sweet to Keep, Gift, or Take with You

Always fragrant breakfasts with a cake that stays soft for weeks (even months!) 😍✨

The jar cake, taken from Tempo di Ricette di Angela, is a brilliant idea for those who love homemade sweets that are always fresh and ready to enjoy. It simply involves baking a soft cake batter directly in glass jars, which will be hermetically sealed as soon as they come out of the oven. Thanks to the heat, a vacuum will be created that will keep it soft and fragrant for a long time. A perfect method for breakfasts, outings, snacks away from home, or even to make original and delightful gifts! 🎁💛

📝 Necessary Material

  • Glass jars with straight or tapered mouth, NOT with a narrow opening
  • Vacuum-sealed lids
  • Oven mitts, pot holders, towels
  • Static oven at 180°C

👩‍🍳 How to Prepare the Jar Cake

  1. Choose your favorite recipe: a soft and risen cake (like a bundt cake, pound cake, vanilla or cocoa cake, with chocolate chips, citrus fruits, etc.).
  2. Butter and flour the jars (or brush them with oil and sprinkle with sugar), making sure they are perfectly clean and dry.
  3. Fill each jar halfway, maximum two-thirds: the batter will rise during baking.
  4. Arrange the jars on a baking sheet and bake in a preheated static oven at 180°C for about 20 minutes.
    • The time depends on the amount of batter, but it is always less than that of a whole cake.
  5. Meanwhile, prepare the lids and everything needed to handle the hot jars.
  6. As soon as they are out of the oven, immediately cap the still hot jars with their lids: a vacuum will form during cooling.
  7. Listen for the “pop” of the lid being sucked in: it's the sign that the vacuum has worked!

Important Tips

  • If a jar does not seal, consume it within 1-2 days.
  • Store the jars in a cool, dry place: they last up to 3 months.
  • Use a tested recipe to avoid surprises the first time.
  • Choose jars with a wide bottom to easily extract the whole cake.

💡 Usage Ideas:

  • Great to take on picnics or to the office
  • Perfect for creating homemade gift baskets
  • Ideal for those who love breakfast without rushing to the stove
