A journey through history at Passo dello Stelvio
The Museo Storico Carlo Donegani is located at 2758 meters above sea level, at Passo dello Stelvio, in the municipality of Bormio. Set up inside the branch of Banca Popolare di Sondrio, the museum is dedicated to engineer Carlo Donegani (1775-1845), designer of the famous Stelvio road, built between 1820 and 1825 on commission from the Imperial Royal Lombardo-Venetian Government
🏛️ The three sections of the museum
The exhibition path is divided into three thematic sections:
- Blue section – The Great War: features photographic panels and captions, a showcase with historical artifacts, and a reconstruction of a stone trench, accompanied by original materials such as barbed wire and machine gun shields, found at the battle sites.
- Red section – The events: retraces, through images, the events that marked Passo dello Stelvio, including summer skiing, the Giro d'Italia, and other sporting events.
- Green section – The road: dedicated to the design and construction of the Stelvio road, considered a masterpiece of nineteenth-century civil engineering.
