Ponte in Valtellina among the most sustainable municipalities in Italy

Being originally from Ponte in Valtellina, I can only be proud of this result. Seeing my town recognized at the national level for its concrete commitment to sustainability is a real satisfaction. It is not just about symbolic recognitions, but about work done with seriousness, step by step, which today is justly appreciated.

On Saturday, June 14th in Ponte in Valtellina, the Sustainability Report 2024 was presented. The chosen location was the Roseto del Drago, a place that in recent years has become a point of reference for important events and meetings.

The Municipality has received two official recognitions: the Flag of Sustainable Municipalities 2025 and the Dragonfly of Sustainable Municipalities, thus entering the Guide to Italian Sustainable Municipalities 2025/2026, a volume presented at the Turin Book Fair that gathers the most virtuous experiences at the national level.

Speaking about the results and future prospects were the mayor Franco Biscotti, the municipal councilor Brunella Giacomoli, the president of the Mountain Community Tiziano Maffezzini, and the network director Giovanni Gostoli.

The report was elaborated by the Network of Sustainable Municipalities based on data provided by the Municipality itself and from entities like ISTAT. The goal is to monitor precisely the trends of various indicators related to the environment, services, administrative management, and quality of life.

The data speaks clearly

60% of the indicators related to municipal competencies show a positive or stable trend in recent years. Looking only at the last year, the figure stands at 56%.

Among the most significant aspects are:

  • gender equality in the municipal council
  • 51% of public lighting already converted to LED
  • increased urban greenery
  • the presence of municipal zero-impact vehicles
  • the strengthening of the municipal police force and surveillance

From an organizational and management perspective:

  • the average payment times for invoices are advanced by more than 15 days
  • the process to establish a Renewable Energy Community has been initiated
  • in 2023, the Civil Protection Plan was approved
  • punctual billing for TARI has been introduced

The upcoming challenges

Despite the positive results, the Municipality still has room for improvement. The Network of Sustainable Municipalities has suggested:

  • the activation of a nursery service, even in an associated form
  • the adoption of the Public Notice Charter
  • the realization of an accessible park
  • the establishment of a youth representation body
  • the adoption of plans dedicated to accessibility and digitalization

A concrete commitment

Mayor Biscotti emphasized how joining the Network is an opportunity for Ponte to grow and compare itself, but also a way to responsibly enhance the territory. The entire municipal area, which extends on both sides of the valley and is traversed by the Adda and the Valtellina Path, requires careful management that takes into account environmental and landscape resources.

Giovanni Gostoli also acknowledged the value of this achievement: “Ponte in Valtellina is the first municipality in the province of Sondrio to have obtained the Flag of Sustainable Municipalities. The data from the first report demonstrate a concrete attention to sustainability in all its dimensions.”

An important result that confirms how even a small-sized reality can be an example of good administration and vision for the future.
